US electronic payment technologies company VeriFone Holdings has closed a licensing deal with iMobilise Transportation Systems (iMTS) for the implementation of its taxi payment and media solutions in South Africa.

Under the terms of the agreement, starting this spring, VeriFone systems will be deployed in 1,500 taxis in the urban centres of Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town, in a bid to provide customers with passenger information technology and payment options such as credit cards, Chip and PIN-based debit, and contactless.

VeriFone Transportation Systems provides mobile payment and transportation automation services, enabling mobile payment, navigation, dispatch, text messaging, and information delivery capabilities to taxi fleets. The company has also deployed transportation systems in other regions of the world, including Istanbul, Singapore and New York City.

In other news, VeriFone announces the acquisition of the Clear Channel Taxi Media business from Clear Channel Outdoor.
