Transport for London (TfL), UK’s London transport system coordinating body, has acquired the rights to the Oyster Card, the electronic smartcard ticketing scheme employed on public transport services within the Greater London area.

Under the deal, which the BBC reports is worth GBP 1 million, TfL is planning to develop new uses for the Oyster system, which include integrating the Oyster contactless technology into bank cards and mobile phones. The same source indicates that TfL is in the process of running such a trial in the hope of extending the range of services made available to Londoners via the Oyster scheme.
