A smart ticketing initiative was launched in the UK by the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive (GMPTE) and the Bolton City Council in collaboration with public transportation company Arriva and three local smart card and ticketing companies.

The joint project consists of deploying a multi-purse smart card infrastructure. The system enables cardholders to access Council services, use an eMoney retail purse and ITSO enabled pay-as-you-go bus travel purse. The partnership also includes integrated ticketing systems company Parkeon, smart card transaction systems provider Applied Card Technologies Ltd (ACT) and sQuid, a UK-based smart card payments network for whose pre-pay system enables the use of multi-functional smart cards.

Cardholders can thus pay for bus travel on over 30 Arriva bus routes in Bolton, in addition to accessing Council services and shopping at local participating stores. Children with the Council issued BSmart card can pay for bus journeys, entrance to leisure centres, pay for snacks and take books out of the library without needing to carry cash. Parents can top up their child’s card online and view their transactions.

The pay-as-you-go transit purse has been specially adapted by sQuid to work on any ITSO smart card and provides a secure platform for customers and operators to make electronic transactions.
