Visa contactless cards usage to witness significant increase in the UK- research

Tuesday 6 July 2010 11:40 CET | News

The number of Visa contactless payment cards in the UK is expected to reach 12 million by the end of 2010, Press Association has reported.

According to Visa Europe’s research, the amount of transactions carried out with a contactless payment card has doubled during the past six months of 2010. Such a significant growth comes after the number of contactless cards used within the UK borders surpassed 8 million in June.

The increasing tendency to pay with contactless cards was predictable since, according to Mark Austin, the head of contactless at Visa Europe, “contactless technology has grown in popularity and is fast becoming an everyday way to pay”, the same source indicates.

In the UK, nearly 26,000 outlets accept contactless payments, including Subway, Pret A Manger, some Boots outlets, selected branches of Spar, Ikea and other independent convenience stores.
