The French city of Strasbourg has joined Nice in becoming France’s second capital for contactless technology, after the roll-out of contactless payment capabilities on a trial basis. The launch follows the successful deployment of contactless payments in Nice in May 2010.

Visa Europe is one of the players involved in the roll-out. Its actions are in line with the work being carried out by the French Ministry of the Economy, Finance and Industry, which aims to make contactless payments by card and mobile widely available across France.

A number of Visa Europe’s member banks play are involved in the Strasbourg pilot, including BNP Paribas, Banque Postale, Banque Populaire d’Alsace et Caisse d’Epargne d’Alsace (Groupe BPCE), Crédit Agricole, Crédit Mutuel-CIC, HSBC. The pilot focuses on the distribution of contactless payment terminals and cards.

Visa Europe is also launching a campaign in Strasbourg to help raise public awareness of the benefits of contactless technology.

There are currently around 23 million contactless Visa cards across Europe, distributed by 50 different issuing banks, with over 150,000 contactless terminals. 15 million of these cards and 70,000 of these terminals are within the UK.
