Monday 9 April 2012 10:34 CET | News

Bahrain has introduced an e-key system to enable citizens to access electronic services in the public and private sectors.

The newly launched system is part of Bahrain’s new vision to prepare the country for the digital future, Deputy Premier and Supreme Committee for Information and Communication Technology Chairman Shaikh Mohammed bin Mubarak Al Khalifa has unveiled.

The e-key system, which is the first in the region, provides three layers of security, including passcode, smart card and fingerprint for identity verification. Additionally, it allows users to access government services offered via all available channels. In order to activate the service, users will have to create a personal account on the e-government portal.

A national e-government strategy, which will be implemented by 2016, to upgrade Bahrains position in e-government services internationally, was also rolled out. The strategy contains 90 new initiatives that will be launched throughout the next four years. The initiatives also include service procedures through one-stop shops, the use of social media networks to communicate with citizens, creating open data platforms to develop new applications and services.

Bahrain had previously launched new mobile phone applications based on GPS technology. They are compatible with Android and iTunes systems, BlackBerry devices and include an NGO directory, e-gov SMS generator, electricity and water e-billing and flight information
