Consumers trust credit card verification by fingerprint – survey

Friday 15 October 2010 09:49 CET | News

Consumers prefer fingerprint biometrics over photo identification, PIN numbers or handwritten signatures to verify their identities when using a credit card or requesting personal information, a recent survey points out.

According to an online poll conducted by US information technology company Unisys, when questioned about the safest method for credit card identity verification, 63 percent of respondents singled out the fingerprint biometrics as compared to photo identification (20 percent), PIN numbers (13 percent) and handwritten signatures (six percent).

The survey’s findings reinforce the results of the April 2010 Unisys Security Index which have shown an increasing tendency of biometric security adoption among US consumers. According to the findings, 93 percent of respondents were willing to supply a biometric to increase physical safety at airports. Moreover, 65 percent of Americans responded they would cooperate with full electronic body scans at the airport and 55 percent would be willing to submit to identity checks using biometric data such as iris scans or fingerprints.
