Netherlands-based digital security services company Gemalto has provided Omani financial services provider BankMuscat and the Royal Oman Police with an e-ID card that includes an embedded ePurse application.

The e-ID card with embedded ePurse functionality has gone live in Oman, with cardholders starting to activate the ePurse application. Gemalto acted as prime contractor for the cards, supplying BankMuscat and the Royal Oman Police with its Coesys ePurse suite that includes the e-ID cards, a post-issuance solution to activate the application and a centralized system to manage the transactions. Gemalto also provided consulting services, project management as well as support and maintenance.

BankMuscat, which acts as an issuer of the ePurse, initiated and implemented the project. In the near future, Oman’s Information Technology Authority is set to host the ePurse system in-house and expand the application to all the banks in Oman.

With the Gemalto solution, Omani citizens and residents can employ the ePurse application without the need to renew their e-ID card. Cardholders can use the ePurse to perform transactions and pay for administrative fees, car registration, driving license and visa applications. They can also reload their mobile phone prepaid subscription and make purchases in a number of supermarkets. In the future, the ePurse application will enable payment of public car parks and toll gates.
