HSBC Bermuda introduces security software to protect customers from phishing attacks

Financial services provider HSBC Bermuda has revealed plans to introduce a security software that will protect customers against phishing and other online scams.

The security software, dubbed Trusteer Rapport, will alert customers if they are about to open a fraudulent website that is similar to the one HSBC sends.

A phishing attack is when fraudsters try to acquire information such as usernames, passwords, bank account numbers of credit card details by sending customers an e-mail that is similar to the one from their bank. The email will often prompt customers to click on a link that takes them to a fake website almost identical to that of their bank. Customers are then asked to enter their username and password into the fake website and soon their bank details have been compromised.

According to Raphael Simons, who heads the security and fraud risk department for the HSBC Bank Bermuda, cited by online media outlet Royal Gazette, has declared that it is really important to make people understand that the bank will never ask for banking details in an e-mail or send a link to enter them online. Mr. Simons has also mentioned that while Trusteer will protect customers from fraudulent websites, it is vital to use it alongside other antivirus software and a firewall, as it is not designed to replace other antivirus protection.
