More than 20% of phishing attacks target banks, other financial institutions

The total number of phishing attacks worldwide has jumped by 87 percent between May 2012 and April 2013, a recent survey unveils.

According to “The Evolution of Phishing Attacks” report released by Kaspersky Lab, a vendor of endpoint protection solutions, during the period under review, 20.64 percent of phishing attacks have targeted users of banks and other credit card and financial institutions.

Results show that 37.3 million users worldwide were subjected to phishing attacks in 2012-2013, up by 87 percent from 2011-2012. Research points out that the attacks were most frequently launched from the US, the UK, Germany, Russia and India, and have mostly targeted users in Russia, the US, India, Vietnam and the UK.

The report is based on data collected from the cloud-based Kaspersky Security Network, which includes more than 60 million participants worldwide.
