Germany-based access, identity and exchange services provider SCM Microsystems has shipped over 200,000 SCR3310v2.0 smart card readers to support an eGovernment and eID programme in Spain.

As a result, individuals and businesses will be able to use the reader to digitally sign documents, to access e-government applications as part of the DNI electronic card project in Spain, as well as e-banking and e-administration applications. Almost 14 million electronic ID Cards have been issued to Spanish citizens since 2006.

SCM has been awarded the contract by red.es, an entity within the Spanish Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Trade. Citizens will gain access to the readers at no charge, as part of a strategy to help drive distribution and use of the electronic ID card.
