Vormetric, a provider of enterprise encryption and key management services, has expanded its operations across Europe, by establishing a business unit in the UK.

In addition, the company has appointed Paul Ayers as vice president of EMEA Sales. Ayers, who has previously worked by security company PGP Corporation until its acquisition by Symantec, will be in charge of the UK business unit, which serves as headquarters for Vormetric’s EMEA operations.

According to the latest Ponemon Institute report on the cost of data breaches to the UK organisations, the average per capita cost of a data breach has increased from GBP 71 to GBP 79 in 2011. The research also indicates that the number of breached records per incident ranged from approximately 3,500 records to more than 78,000 records. For companies in the UK, the consequences of a data breach include significant fines. In April 2010, the Information Commissioners Office (ICO) was granted powers to fine organisations up to GBP 500,000 per data breach, and has since then issued fines as high as GBP 325,000.
