In 2009, only 5 percent of the Bulgarian population shopped online, The Sophia Echo reports, citing data released by Eurostat, the European Union statistics office.

The percentage is seven times smaller than the blocks average of 37 percent and similar to the figures registered in Lithuania and Romania, the same source indicates. Less than 20 percent of Bulgarians browsed the web to search for details on products and services. During the period under review, Bulgaria registered the poorest internet penetration levels of all EU countries, with only 30 percent of households connected to the internet.
