Alibaba to launch international version of Taobao marketplace

Tuesday 25 November 2014 07:38 CET | News

Alibaba has revealed plans to set up an international version of its ecommerce marketplace Taobao to serve shoppers worldwide in multiple languages, including English and Chinese, Reuters reports.

Alibaba currently has an international ecommerce platform specializing in wholesale goods called Aliexpress, but does not have a similar offering for consumers to sell to each other.

In September 2014, Taobao launched a regional version for Southeast Asia, with translation available for a few major languages, including English. But the translated version only applies to links and navigational elements, not the actual product listings.
