Apple introduces App Store subscription service

Thursday 17 February 2011 09:28 CET | News

Apple has rolled out a digital subscription service aimed at publishers of content-based apps on the App Store, such as magazines, newspapers, video and music.

The new system, which is used for apps on the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad, will enable publishers to establish the price and length of recurring payment plans (weekly, monthly, bi-monthly, quarterly, bi-yearly or yearly).

Publishers can either sell digital subscriptions on their websites, or can offer existing subscribers free access. For those subscribers that have signed up outside of the app, publishers must provide their own authentication process within the application. In case the publisher prefers to sell a digital subscription separately outside of the app, customers who are interested in subscribing from within the app should benefit from the same subscription offer, at the same price or less.

When subscribing, the customers buying a subscription via the App Store will be given the option of providing the publisher with their name, email address and zip code. The use of such data will be governed by the publisher’s privacy policy rather than Apple’s.

The App Store offers over 350,000 apps to consumers in 90 countries, with more than 60,000 native iPad apps.
