Central European B2C e-commerce on its way up

Central European B2C E-Commerce market has witnessed a strong upward trend due to the steady growth of internet users, on the one hand and increase of online shoppers, on the other hand, a recent report has unveiled.

According to the “Central Europe B2C E-Commerce Report 2011” released by research company yStats.com, in Germany, almost 60 percent of the population has ordered goods or services for private use online as compared to the EU average of 40 percent,. The most popular categories for online purchases have been clothing and sporting goods, followed by the categories books, magazines, e-learning resources, films/music and household items.

The report has pointed out that in Austria, B2C e-commerce revenue has accounted for 6.4 percent of all retail revenue in 2011. More than 60 percent of all internet users have searched online for providers of goods and services. In 2010, 40 percent of the Austrian population have made online purchases. In 2010 the most popular B2C e-commerce category in Austria was “books, magazines, newspapers, e-learning resources”, followed by “clothing, sporting goods”.

As far as the Swiss online market is concerned, 55 percent of all Swiss users have accessed the internet for buying or ordering online. The report has highlighted that the number of internet users in Switzerland has jumped by more than 5 million in 2010, equalling approximately 80 percent of the total population.

B2C e-commerce revenue in Switzerland has increased by more than 50 percent in 2010 compared to 2009. The Swiss online shoppers have planned to purchase books, followed by the categories plane tickets and clothing.
