eBay acquires barcode-scanning iPhone application

Friday 25 June 2010 09:26 CET | News

eBay has bought RedLaser, a barcode-scanning application for iPhone developed by technology startup Occipital.

The company plans to integrate the technology into its apps, including eBay Marketplace, eBay Selling, StubHub and Shopping.com. The technology will help consumers find deals online for virtually any product with a barcode, while eBay sellers will be able to create listings by accessing pricing trends and product details for items included in eBays catalogue.

The RedLaser technology is being used in various applications including grocery shopping lists, gift registries, and nutritional tracking. The scanner works by holding an iPhone up to a barcode on a physical item in a store. If the item is recognized, the phone will offer more information about the product, including online prices.

eBay has also revealed plans to increase RedLasers scope by integrating more than 200 million listings from eBay and products from over 7,000 merchants on Shopping.com. Terms for the deal have not been disclosed.

In 2010, eBay expects to reach USD 1.5 billion in gross merchandise volume via its mobile platforms. eBays mobile applications are available to millions of iPhone, BlackBerry and Android users over 190 countries and eight languages
