eBay has completed the acquisition of mobile payment services provider Zong, for USD 240 million in cash, online media outlet businessweek.com reports.

Zong will enable eBay to extend the reach of its PayPal online payments service, specifically in the mobile payments and digital goods markets.

Zong enables consumers to pay for purchases from their mobile phones or computers via direct carrier billing. Consumers need to enter their mobile phone numbers. Then, Zong is set to verify the number and clear the payment on the customers’ existing wireless service account. Zong is connected with more than 250 mobile network operators around the world, offering payments capabilities for digital goods and services in 21 languages and 45 countries.

In June 2011, eBay has completed the acquisition of the US e-commerce and multichannel services provider GSI Commerce for USD 2.4 billion.
