eBay joins forces with China Post, US Postal Service for shipping programs

Monday 31 May 2010 11:11 CET | News

US auction site eBay has entered a partnership with China Post Express and the US Postal Service to launch shipping programs that would enable Chinese merchants to sell to US consumers.

The agreement is part of eBay`s strategy to focus on export-oriented Chinese merchants who are interested in offering their products via international websites. Central to the partnership is the development of an express delivery service to the US that will be run by China Postal Express and Logistics Corporation, a division of China Post, and which will include online tracking systems. Sellers can thus track their shipments with electronic notifications such as in-process and proof-of-delivery scans at ebay.cn. eBay.cn is a Chinese platform targeting Chinese merchants, mainly small and medium-sized enterprises.

China Post’s agreement with the Postal Service includes the development of cobranded shipping labels integrated with barcoding technology readable by both companies, as well as logistics planning and Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) information exchanges.

China’s online shopping and e-commerce sales have seen a significant increase from USD 21.4 billion to USD 36.6 billion during the fiscal year of 2009, according to the Shanghai-based Chinese Internet Network Information Center. Also, the number of Chinese internet users surged to 28.9 percent in 2009, reaching a figure of 384 million.
