Ecommerce in Sweden to be worth EUR 16.86 bln in 2019

Ecommerce in Sweden is expected to be worth EUR 16.86 billion at the end of 2019, according to a report by Ecommerce Foundation.

The report has found that the Swedish business-to-consumer ecommerce turnover was worth EUR 14.95 billion in 2018 and predicts that this will increase by 12.8%.

Other key findings:

  • the share of the country’s total GDP that is made up by ecommerce continues to increase every year – in 2018, it was 3.24% and for 2019, it is expected that ecommerce will account for 3.55% of Sweden GDP;

  • 84% of online Swedes shop online (in 2015, 78% of internet users bought products and services online);

  • Swedes who shop online spend on average EUR 2,124 in 2019;

  • clothing and footwear make up the most popular product category (39%) in Sweden, followed by beauty and health care products (32%), books and media (27%), and home electronics (23%);

  • picking up the products at a selected pickup location is the most preferred delivery method, followed by home delivery in the evening (11%) and parcel machine and home delivery during the day (both 3%);

  • Sweden is a popular shopping destination for neighboring countries, such as Norway and Finland;

  • in 2018, cards were the most popular payment method in Sweden (53%), followed by bank transfer (22%), e-invoice (15%), e-wallet (9%) and cash on delivery (1%).
