European online businesses lag behind the US

European businesses are way behind the US in getting online, a recent survey points out.

According to a study conducted by database and marketing company Email-Brokers, even though countries such as Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands have the highest proportion of companies online, in these regions there still are 40 percent of businesses with no online presence.

Data pointed out that Britain and Liechtenstein were the most advanced when it comes to e-commerce, in terms of processing orders and payments, with 16 percent and 17 percent, respectively, as compared to only 6 percent in Belgium and 9 percent in Austria, Germany and the Netherlands.

Email-Brokers head William Vande Wiele, cited by online media outlet thedomains.com, has declared that many corporate websites were badly designed and did not provide basic information such as adequate contact information or company details.

The study also found that more than 80 percent of business websites in Belgium, Greece, Italy and Spain have not been updated for more than a year.
