France: the number of online shoppers hits 31.7 mln in Q2 2012

In Q2 2012, the number of French online shoppers has reached 31.7 million, up by 4 percent since Q2 2011, online media outlet Telecompaper unveils.

According to a study released by market researcher Mediametrie, the growth was mostly a result of an increasing number of younger and older online buyers. Data points out that there were 11 percent more 50 to 64 year-old consumers taking part in e-commerce, 8 percent more aged 65 and over and 7 percent more online shoppers with ages between 16 and 24.

Results show that during the period under review, Frances main e-commerce brands by monthly unique visitors were Amazon with 11.6 million, eBay with 9.45 million, Cdiscount with 8.69 million, Fnac with 8.23 million and PriceMinister with 7.53 million.

With regard to e-commerce mobile brands including websites and applications, the study indicated that the most preferred ones were Amazon with 1.45 million, Groupon with 930,000, Voyages-SNCF with 798,000, eBay with 765,000 and Vente-Privee with 660,000.

According to another research by distance-selling association Fevad, online sales have jumped by 22 percent year-on-year reaching EUR 21.8 billion in Q1 2012. Revenues have increased by 24 percent in Q1 and by 21 percent in Q2, as compared to the same periods in 2011. The number of e-commerce websites has risen by 23 percent to 109,800 websites at the end of June 2012.
