India: 56% of online shoppers come for tier-II cities and towns

In 2012, 56 percent of India’s online shoppers have come from tier-II cities and towns, a recent study points out.

According to statistics from venture capital firm Accel Partners, the country’s e-tailing sector has exceeded USD 80 million, with the number of online shoppers reaching 13 million. The number of unique shoppers excluded the online travel agency (OTA) market.

Data shows that women have accounted for 21 percent of the online shoppers, almost doubling their share since 2011. Furthermore, the overall visitors to e-commerce stores have increased by 44 percent.

The study unveils that Indias internet penetration has jumped 8 percent with 137 million users, of which 20 million were shoppers including OTA. According to Prashanth Prakash, partner at Accel Partners, cited by online media outlet timesofindia.indiatimes.com, almost 59 percent of the Indian online shoppers are under 25 years.
