North America: shipping charges, security, lengthy processes - top three cart abandonment reasons

Shipping charges, concerns about security and the purchasing process taking too long are most likely to make consumers abandon online shopping, a new study indicates.

According to a survey conducted by e-commerce software and services specialist Postcode Anywhere, 76 percent of consumers have mentioned shipping charges as the main factor for shopping cart abandonment. Data shows that security concerns have ranked second with 57 percent of votes, followed by lengthy purchasing processes, with 39 percent of consumers placing it in their top three reasons for cart abandonment.

Results also unveil that 67 percent of shoppers find it difficult to purchase from a mobile device and 23 percent of consumers would abandon their cart if a form took too long to fill in. According to research, 39 percent consumers have recently faced a poor online experience and over half (55 percent) of these relate to accurate address capture.

The study was conducted on a sample of 2,000 North American consumers, who were questioned about their online shopping habits and experiences, including top reasons for cart abandonment.
