Online shopping in Morocco on the way up

The e-commerce sector in Morocco is expected to reach USD 85 million (MAD 700 million) in total sales in 2011, a recent study, cited by online media outlet magharebia.com, has revealed.

According to the Centre for Interbank Payment Systems (CMI), the revenue generated for the first 6 months of 2011 has exceeded USD 28 million (MAD 230 million) as compared with USD 14.5 million ( MAD 120 million) over the same period in 2010.

Online purchases and sales have jumped by 2.4 percent from 277,000 transactions during H1 2011, as compared with 115,000 recorded in H1 2010. The majority of buyers are local, as 95 percent of transactions involve the use of Moroccan payment. The value of the average e-commerce order now stands at around USD 97 (MAD 800), as compared with USD 243 (MAD 2,000) in 2010.

Morocco currently has more than 2 million internet subscribers and 13 million internet users and there are more than 40,000 websites registered under the .ma domain.
