The number of Australians sourcing business via the Chinese online B2B marketplace Alibaba.com has climbed by 73 percent over the past year to almost half a million, according to media outlet pitchengine.com.

According to Daphne Lee, Alibaba`s Director International Business Development & Marketing Asia Pacific, cited by the same source, the company`s growth in Australia surpasses the US and the UK, accounting for 3 percent of total registered users on its international marketplace.

Alibaba.com enables buyers and suppliers to do business online via three marketplaces: a global trade platform for importers and exporters; a platform for domestic trade in China and a Japanese platform enabling trade to and from Japan. Alibaba also offers AliExpress, an e-commerce platform offering smaller-quantity orders, instant online transactions and an escrow service to protect buyers and sellers.

At the end of Q1 2011, the company registered over 65 million users in more than 240 countries and regions.
