Returns increased 8 percent in Europe in 2019

The number of returns in Europe in the first 3.5 months of 2019 has increased by 8% compared to the same period of 2018, according to a DynamicAction report.

At the same time, free shipping has risen 3% and goods purchased using a short-term promotion grew 29%.

Other key findings from DynamicAction’s Retail Index: Spring 2019, which analysed almost EUR 11 billion of online consumer transactions from the start of 2018 until 15 April:

  • consumers have intent of returning items;

  • there is a growing trend from consumers to buy multiple products online with the intent of returning some items;

  • online retailers are looking for incentives to attract customers and remain competitive;

  • major online retailers are slowly trying to undo free delivery;

  • online retailers in Europe saw their marketing costs increase by 74% compared to the same period of 2018;

  • new customer acquisition decreased by 10%.
