Southeast Asia: Visa rolls out mobile-based one-time password for online shopping

Financial services provider KASIKORNBANK has joined forces with Visa to provide KASIKORNBANK Visa cardholders in Thailand with enhanced protection when shopping online via a new service based on a one-time password authentication.

In order to be able to use the service, KASIKORNBANK Visa cardholders can enroll their Visa cards for Verified by Visa and register a mobile phone number in a secure area of the KASIKORNBANK website.

The service, powered by the online authentication platform Verified by Visa, is set to enable KASIKORNBANK Visa cardholders to use a mobile phone-based one-time password to authenticate themselves when using the Visa card to make purchases over the internet.

The password is sent to the cardholder’s mobile number via a text message and can be used when making payments to verify the cardholder’s identity as well as enhancing online shopping security.

Visa and KASIKORNBANK cooperated to introduce Visa payWave contactless payment in 2008 as well as to trial mobile payment technology in 2009.
