UK: One in six online retail visits ended in a purchase in August 2010 - report

A recent report points out that 16 percent of UK online shopping visits have ended in a purchase during August 2010,.

According to the findings of the study released by research company Nielsen, 89 million transactions have resulted from the month’s 546 million shopping visits. In addition, more than 8 out of 10 of the active online population (31.6 million people) have visited at least one of the UK’s e-commerce sites in August 2010.

Furthermore, when asked to mention why they choose to make purchases using the online channel, respondents have cited ‘cheaper prices’ (57 percent), ‘the ability to shop at any time’ (32 percent) whereas 29 percent claimed that ‘not having to deal with sales staff’ was one of their three biggest motivators.

According to the same study, conversion rates for various UK e-commerce sites have registered high values, all above 15 percent. Cut by category, the study has found that conversion rates for ‘catalogue-clothing’ sites such as Next or Freemans were between 9 and15 percent, whereas supermarkets (Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury as well as Marks and Spencer) grouped somewhat lower.

Results of the report point out that, in August 2010, UK consumers spent more on electronic goods (GBP 156 each) than on any other category. Amazon ranked first among UK consumers’ preferences, with 36 percent of respondents claiming that they have visited the website to buy electronic equipment. FMCG shopping was the next-biggest spending category, with people purchasing an average GBP129 of groceries online in the month.
