US consumers plan online shopping for the holiday season – survey

Nine in ten US consumers plan to shop online for 2010 - 2011 holiday season, a recent survey has revealed.

According to the informal survey conducted by US e-business services provider Plimus, more than 50 percent of polled US consumers plan to purchase consumer electronics, such as mobile phones, e-readers, games or consoles. Additionally, seven in 10 interviewees said they considered giving digital entertainment or virtual items as gifts this year, the survey has pointed out.

The same source has discovered that 50 percent of the US respondents admitted planning to buy digital entertainment devices, such as online games, videos, subscriptions and other items.

Therefore, seven in 10 people claimed they would buy music downloads from websites, such as iTunes. Moreover, 40 percent of polled consumers said they considered buying movie downloads from various websites; one of three respondents have also indicated that they are planning to buy online games for the upcoming holiday season. According to the survey, the interviewees were shown to also value gift cards in terms of digital entertainments devices for 2010 holiday season.

A recent report published by market research company In-Stat has highlighted that revenue specifically generated from the sale of virtual goods has increased 245 percent from USD 2.1 billion in 2007 to USD 7.3 billion in 2010, with growth expected to reach USD 14 billion by 2014.
