US holiday spending reaches USD 35.3 million, up 15% y-o-y – study

For the first 56 days of the November – December 2011 holiday season, US online spending has reached USD 35.3 million, up by 15 percent as compared with the corresponding period in 2010, a recent study has shown.

Online retail spending for the week ending on 25 December 2011 has also witnessed a 16 percent increase, reaching USD 2.8 billion, according to market research firm comScore.

The study has also indicated that over the past several years the purchase of digital content and subscriptions, including digital downloads of music, television, movies, e-books and applications, has increased during Christmas.

During the 2011 holiday season (1November – 26 December) digital content and subscriptions accounted for 2.8 percent of retail e-commerce sales on an average day, but on Christmas Day, online spending for this category represented over 20 percent of the total sales.
