US m-commerce sales will jump to USD 31 billion by 2015, a recent study has revealed. M-commerce sales in the US will reach USD 6.7 billion in 2011, a 91.4 percent growth as compared to the USD 3.5 billion sales recorded in 2010. By the end of 2011, 26.8 billion consumers are estimated to make at least one purchase on their mobile phone.

According to a new forecast released by the research company eMarketer, in 2012, m-commerce sales will see a 73.1 percent increase, climbing to USD 11.6 billion.

The top 300 merchants in mobile commerce will reach total 2011 sales of USD 5.7 billion, according to the Internet Retailer Mobile Commerce Top 300. This includes retail, travel and tickets as well as purchases via tablets and excludes most digital download.

The findings of the study have indicated that 37.5 million US consumers aged 14 and up will make at least one purchase via their mobile phone in 2012. Most of this group will include smartphone owners, estimated at 97 percent in 2012. Overall, 72.8 million mobile users will research or browse items on their phones next year but not necessarily make a purchase.

The eMarketer forecast of mobile sales is based on an analysis of data from research firms as well as overall trends in mobile ownership and usage. M-commerce sales include sales of physical goods as well as travel and event tickets purchased via mobile, but exclude digital downloads and usage of mobile phones as a point-of-sale payment mechanism. Moreover, the estimates for m-commerce sales do not include purchases made via tablet devices.
