Walmart and Humana discuss possible acquisition

Friday 30 March 2018 14:10 CET | News

Reuters: Representatives of Walmart and Humana have met to discuss ‘closer ties’ which could result in an acquisition of Humana by the retailer.

Walmart approached Humana in early March 2018 and the discussions are in early states. While the conversations have focused on new partnerships, an acquisition of Humana by Walmart is also something being discussed, reports Reuters citing anonymous sources.

Walmart and Humana have market capitalizations of USD 264 billion and USD 37 billion, respectively.

If the acquisition goes through, Walmart would become one of the largest insurance provider in the US. Walmart currently operates pharmacies in close to 4,700 stores in the country and has been investing in healthcare.

Walmart currently has a co-branded Medicare drug plan with Humana that steers patients to Walmart stores. The partnership offers a prescription drug plan that can save up to 20% in drug costs for customers, Reuters reports.
