Via its zCoins, Zynga will enable gamers to purchase goods when playing ten of the Zynga games including CityVille, FarmVille, Zynga Poker, FrontierVille and Mafia Wars. The company has launched Zynga RewardVille to allow gamers to build up zPoints that can be eventually turned into zCoins.
On the other hand, Facebook will require all social game developers to accept payments through Facebook Credits, its own virtual currency system beginning with 1 July 2011. Facebook charges game developers with 30 percent when they use Credits to sell virtual goods and other items.
Although in May 2010 Zynga and Facebook signed a five-year agreement to continue to offer social games on Facebook and expand the use of Facebook Credits in Zyngas games, the company intends to gain autonomy from Facebook as it moves to diversify its business by establishing its presence on smartphones.
