EPCA Summit 2012 - Tonnis de Boer, Innopay: "PSPs - a focus on volume could be the lead direction to stay competitive"

Wednesday 18 April 2012 10:15 CET | Editor: Melisande Mual | Interview

The 11th international EPCA Payment Summit consists of a 2,5 day program which centers around ‘the best of the transaction services industry’. This year, a special PSP track is part of this program. Could you provide our readers with some insights into this strategic PSP track?

Tonnis de Boer: Payment service providers (PSPs) and acquirers are facing the changing requirements of global e-merchants in order to remain positioned as a valuable business partner. At the same time they face mega complexity in the back office as a result of regulation. This special PSP track

From your perspective, what should PSPs do from a strategic point of view in order to remain competitive?

Tonnis de Boer: Thats what we will try to learn at the EPCA event, but in my opinion, a focus on volume could be the lead direction to stay competitive. However, there are also many value added e-business services that payment service providers can offer to enhance their proposition and thus their business model. Offering just e-payment capabilities in the supply chain is no longer enough as this business has become an easy and exchangeable commodity. At the same time you cannot be the best at all and probably need to outsource or buy certain skills. The key aspect is to define and select a sustainable scenario where one can develop and integrate new services.

Who are the speakers for this track and what are their key points for discussion at the EPCA event?

Tonnis de Boer: Ralf Gladis, (CEO Computop.com) will speak about his perception on the future of the PSP business.
Bram Barendrecht (Director eBusiness, ModusLink) will explain how the company, as a non-typical PSP with a logistical background, looks at payment services.
Michael Burtsher (Director, Payvision) will present the PSP strategy whitepaper 2012 and will highlight some of the key findings. Topics will include: consolidation of the PSP market, the drive for customer service, keeping margins and offer added value at the same time.
Alphonse Voigt (COO, Boleto Bancario) will speak about the Insight views and strategic lessons on the Latin-American market.

The main topics and take-aways for PSPs are…

Tonnis de Boer:
* Vision on the coming years from CEOs of leading players
* The role of niche players fulfilling specific payment capabilities, e.g. in acquiring
* What to expect in horizontal and vertical integration in the PSP value chain?
* Is there price pressure in specific market segments and can value propositions prevent that situation?
* Why are logistics providers entering the payments space? And will they be successful?
* How different are e-payments in South America and what can we learn from the market?

What is EPCA?

Tonnis de Boer: The EPCA Payment Summit is an excellent way to learn and stay in touch with new concepts, strategies, alternative techniques, global best practices and fundaments of payments and transactions. The program consists of dedicated pre-conference workshops followed by a plenary and specialized track program (of choice). Top professionals and thought leaders from all over the world will present key developments in the payments and transactions space with ample room for in depth discussions. The program focuses on the best of the transaction services industry: mobile payments, e-payments, e-identity, processing, PSP trends, cards, e-financing, security and SEPA. At the 11th edition in Rome The Paypers will moderate a special strategic PSP track.
