Citibanks Mexican unit Banamex has selected US-based electronic payment services provider VeriFone Systems for the deployment of contactless payment services in Mexico City.

In the first phase, VeriFone contactless-enabled card acceptance systems are set to be deployed to merchants in the Mexico City metropolitan area. The bank is also issuing contactless credit and debit cards to begin the transition to contactless payments.

The bank is set to deploy the VeriFone VX 520 to merchants who use traditional standalone countertop systems and the VX 820 advance PIN pad to larger retailers that integrate payment systems to electronic cash register systems.

In recent news, VeriFone Systems has signed a five-year contract with the District of Columbia Taxicab Commission (DCTC). The value of the contract ranges between USD 35 million and USD 45 million.
