MobiPay’s new offering will enable customers to pay for their utility bills or purchases, perform person-to-person money transfers as well as buy airtime for their mobile devices. In order to gain access to the service, customers have to register first with the MobiPay branch network or at MobiPay partner agents and deposit money in cash. The funds are equivalent to the amount of money deposited into a bank account. Once the deposit has been made, the depositors receive an instant alert notification on their mobile phones.
The MobiPay launch follows Bank of Namibia’s initiative to provide the Namibian underbanked population, predominantly the people located in rural areas, with access to basic financial services.
