BlackBerry rolls out m-payments pilot in Indonesia

BlackBerry has rolled out its mobile payment service via a commercial pilot in Indonesia to allow users to transfer money through its instant-messaging service.

With BBM Money, users can create a mobile account from their devices and make real-time payments to their BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) contacts or other bank accounts. They can also buy mobile airtime credit and prepaid SIM cards.

BlackBerry has partnered with Indonesian financial institution PermataBank, which issues BBM Moneys mobile accounts.

The BBM Money service has been created by and BlackBerry, with the support of AGIT Monitise Indonesia, a joint venture between Monitise Asia Pacific and Astra Graphia Information Technology (AGIT), which is part of the Astra International Group.

In recent news, Monitise has announced that the company has tripled the value of payments and transfers over its technology platform, live transactions and registered users in the last year.
