Canada: smartphone ownership, mobile banking usage on the rise - report

Smartphone ownership and mobile banking usage continues to grow in Canada where there is also strong interest in new services such as mobile payments which will allow Canadians to make credit card purchases using their smartphones, a recent report has revealed.

According to the report, 44 percent of Canadian consumers surveyed now own a smartphone, up from 33 percent in 2011. While younger Canadian consumers aged between 18-24 are more likely to own a smartphone (77 percent), ownership numbers were strong in other demographics, including the bottom edge of baby boomers between 45-54 years of age (43 percent).

The report has also found that 47 percent of Canadian consumers with smartphones would consider using it to make mobile payments to their credit card if they could while 36 percent have used their smartphones for mobile banking, up from 25 per cent in 2011. Additionally, 51 percent aged between 25-34 and 48 percent aged between 45-54 said they would consider mobile payments. 59 percent said rewards for credit card purchases are important to them in deciding to use mobile payments.

The survey was carried out by marketing and polling research organization Harris/Decima on behalf of North American financial institution CIBC.
