China UnionPay teams up with Apple Pay for subway fares

China UnionPay has announced a new partnership with Apple to enable commuters in one city to pay for subway fares via Apple Pay.

Subway riders with a China UnionPay card can link their account to Apple Pay to make a transit payments at the more than 6,000 subway gates in Guangzhou.

Payments will be possible using technology called offline data authentication (ODA), and can be completed regardless of an internet connection, UnionPay claims.

More than that, Tencent and Ant Financial have also started making headway in China’s massive public transport market.
