Digicel, a mobile operator in the Caribbean, Central America and the Pacific region, has entered an agreement with US-based electronic payment services provider VeriFone Systems to deploy the latter’s mWallet services and NFC-enabled payment systems in the business district in Tongas capital Nukualofa.

Under the agreement, the NFC-enabled merchant payment service uses NFC tags from Digicel linked to mobile phone numbers and VeriFones contactless payment acceptance systems. The VeriFone mWallet service deployed with Digicel enables mobile money wallet transactions at the point-of-sale using VeriFones biometric and contactless payment acceptance systems. Digicel Tonga subscribers are set to be able to pay for goods and services with a tap of their phones.

In recent news, VeriFone Systems and technology company Lenovo have launched the ThinkPad Mobile POS, a mobile point of sale (POS) platform for retail outlets. The ThinkPad Mobile POS is built on the Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet and a custom version of VeriFones PAYware Mobile Enterprise for tablet payment services.
