Dubbed Web PIN Opt-in, which is to be launched on 26 October 2009, the service enables customers to gain access to online content by entering their mobile phone number on the web page. The operator would then send a one-time PIN via SMS. The PIN fee is deducted from users’ mobile carrier bill and, and after being inserted on the web page, provides them with either one-off access to online articles or longer-term access as part of a subscription deal, according to moconews.net. Mobile subscribers will be able to use the system even if they are not based in their home country, while for those customers who use prepaid phones, costs will be deducted from their balance.
Ericsson has already integrated the platform with 50 operators across 15 countries, including Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Malaysia, Norway, Spain, Sweden and the U.K.
