GlobalPlatform releases technical specifications document for the Trusted Execution Environment

GlobalPlatform, an organization focusing on the development of a standardized infrastructure for the deployment and management of smart cards, has released a technical document containing specifications designed to support mobile devices which manage applications that include sensitive data in a secure manner.

The Trusted Execution Environment (TEE) Client Application Programming Interface (API) Specification is set to establish communication interoperability and support the migration of sensitive services into the TEE, enabling an application to become isolated and easier to control and secure.

The TEE is a secure area located in the main processor of a mobile phone which is expected to ensure that sensitive data will be stored, processed and protected in a trusted environment. One of the main TEE capabilities is the creation of a ‘trusted user interface’. Thus, a mobile payment application can display payment information in a secure window of the mobile device screen while the end-user can introduce a PIN to accept the wireless transaction using the mobile key pad, within the same information-safe window.

GlobalPlatform supports the use of the TEE as a foundation that will facilitate the deployment of sensitive applications such as digital content protection as well as access to enterprise applications and mobile financial services on a device.
