Home Depot to test PayPal`s POS in-store pilot program

Monday 9 January 2012 13:35 CET | News

PayPal has selected US home improvement retailer Home Depot to test an in-store payment system which enables shoppers to buy items without cash or a traditional credit card.

The trial will initially be run in five Home Depot stores and will involve a limited number of PayPal employees, but eBay`s division has revealed plans to expand the program over the coming months.

In order to pay via PayPal at the register, buyers will have to type the phone number related to their PayPal account as well as a personal-identification number into the payment terminal. In addition, PayPal intends to issue a plastic card with a magnetic strip which can be swiped at these terminals, similarly to a debit card.

In September 2011, PayPal has revealed plans to develop new payment technologies which will provide customers with an upgraded shopping experience. The new technologies are expected to engage their customers directly in every part of the shopping lifecycle including generating demand from consumers via location-based offers and making payments accessible from any device.
