India: Karnataka government launches mobile payments service

Monday 14 January 2013 11:24 CET | News

The Karnataka government has launched an integrated mobile-enabled service delivery system as part of a pilot project to enable citizens to pay their electricity, water and mobile bills, pay property tax, access Sakaala services and traffic fines via their mobile devices.

To access the service, citizens need to dial 8088887766 and follow a set of instructions. Citizens can use their credit cards and bank accounts to make payments using the IMPS (Interbank mobile payment service) or mRupee, a wallet-based financial service, provided by Indian broadband and telecommunications service provider Tata Teleservices.

Indian Data and Value Added Services [VAS] company Onmobile has provided the mobile service delivery gateway to the state government for the first phase of the project.
