iZettle rolls out chip & PIN reader; partners Banco Santander

Wednesday 20 February 2013 13:32 CET | News

Swedish social payments start-up iZettle has launched its chip and PIN reader and has entered an agreement with Spanish financial services provider Banco Santander to enable self-employed professionals and micro merchants to accept card payments with smartphones and tablets.

The chip and PIN reader connects wirelessly, via Bluetooth, to a smartphone or tablet. Like the iZettle chip and signature reader, that plugs into a phone or tablet, the new device works with iZettle’s free app that allows small merchants to use a smartphone or tablet to accept card payments and manage their business.

iZettle’s application and card readers work with all major credit cards, including Visa, MasterCard, American Express Maestro, Visa Electron and V Pay.

In addition to Spain, the chip and PIN reader is also available in the UK, Germany, Sweden, Norway and Finland.

iZettle provides hardware and software that can be used by small merchants to turn smartphones and tablets into mobile credit-card terminals. iZettle’s services are compliant with EMV (Europay, MasterCard and VISA) standards as well as with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI-DSS). No sensitive data is stored on the mobile device or iZettle reader, and all data traffic is encrypted.

In recent news, iZettle has entered an agreement with UK-based communications company EE to allow consumers to purchase iZettle mini chip-card readers that turn smartphones and tablets into mobile payments terminals in EE stores across the UK and from EE’s telesales channel.
