South Korean mobile telecommunications operator SK Telecom has teamed up with Japanese mobile operators KDDI and Softbank Mobile to start a trial program for NFC-based mobile payment services between Korea and Japan, media outlet koreaittimes.com reports.

According to the source, the parties are expected to provide Korean and Japanese users with mobile payment products, mobile coupons and other mobile financial services. Some of the mobile payment services include MasterCard PayPass offering in Japan and SK Telecoms mobile money T Cash service in Korea.

The same source has pointed out that once implemented, the NFC-enabled mobile payment service is set to allow tourists from both countries to use their mobile phones loaded with mobile credit cards to make purchases while in Korea or Japan.

The trial program is expected to take place in H1 2011. Following the completion of the trial program, SK Telecom is planning to make NFC technology available for its mobile wallet service, the source reports.

In July 2010, SK Telecom signed a multilateral agreement with KDDI and Softbank Mobile in view of their collaboration on the use of NFC technology in mobile payment services.
