Lloyds TSB becomes partner bank for m-payment services at London 2012 Olympics

UK-based financial institution Lloyd TSB has been named partner bank for mobile payment services at the London Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012, media outlet nearfieldcommunicationsworld.com reports.

According to the source, the bank has thus joined global device manufacturer Samsung and Visa in order to provide NFC-enabled phone payments at the London 2012 Olympics. In addition, the bank is concurrently preparing to roll out a mobile contactless payments programme for UK consumers.

Lloyds TSBs UK mobile payments plan is expected to be launched in a phased approach, starting with an internal pilot using prepaid accounts in May 2011, followed by a commercial launch linked to prepaid accounts by the end of 2011, the source indicates.

London currently counts over 60,000 locations where contactless payments are accepted. As part of future developments, contactless and electronic card payments are expected to be available across London during the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Visa has an exclusive deal with the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympic organisers, under the terms of which fans can only use Visa cards to buy tickets. The tickets for the London 2012 Olympics’ have gone on sale on 15 March 2011 .
