Mobile payments accelerate disruptive changes in retail and web checkouts - report

Friday 29 March 2013 10:30 CET | News

Innovations in mobile transaction services enable the development of new points of interaction between retailers and consumers, redefine loyalty schemes and the checkout experience & spark a veritable “battle for checkout”, according to a new report released by consulting firm Innopay.

The mobile phone as a transaction channel means different things to consumers and merchants in different regions of the globe. The Mobile payments 2013 - Changing checkout report makes use of a context model to categorize mobile payment methods according to the relationship between the two parties involved and their relative location.

From there, the report takes a close look at the value of the mobile device in developing and developed markets, with special emphasis placed on how mobile transaction services answer different consumer needs in each geographical, social and cultural context. Innopay’s report also studies what technologies and ‘value-added services’ are available for mobile payment methods, which ones have the closest fit and which ones carry the most value to consumers and merchants.

“The use of the mobile phone has just started having a disruptive effect on both the payments industry and the way commerce is done - this much is becoming increasingly visible in the way we deal with the checkout both online as offline. Examples of this are not restricted to developed economies – there are plenty of examples from developing markets on the truly disruptive effect of the mobile phone as a transaction channel. The one thing that must not be overlooked at this point is the fact the value of mobile payments varies greatly for consumers and merchants in different regions of the globe”, says Shikko Nijland, Innopay Managing Partner and editor of the Mobile payments 2013 - Changing checkout report. “We see that merchants are increasingly willing to pay for interaction earlier in the value chain like advertisement and coupons. It is the checkout where all transactions need to come together and the loop gets closed”.
