By 2015, worldwide shoppers are expected to spend about USD 119 billion (about 8 percent of the total e-commerce market) on goods and services purchased via their mobile handsets.
According to ABI Research, mobile online shopping has seen a threefold increase in the US from USD 396 million in 2008 to USD 1.2 billion in 2009. Nevertheless, the size of the mobile online shopping market is even greaterin Japan, which exceeded USD 10 billion in 2009 alone.
A sharp increase in smartphone adoption and the enthusiasm for mobile internet are some of the factors which have led to a major soar in the number of mobile shopping customers. Another explanation of this phenomenon emerges from the fact that in many less-industrialized regions, mobiles are the only way to access the internet.
The ‘Mobile Commerce’ study released by ABI Research has also shown that in Q42009, another trend gained prominence: consumers were checking out products in brick-and-mortar retail stores and then used their phones for comparison.
